Sunday Morning Quiet

Stepping out of the house on a Sunday morning at 9am I immediately get that Sunday-feel. But why?
1-DSC_1021
I ponder about it and then it comes to me: It is the quietness, the total tranquility of my surroundings. There is no noise from the road, no neighbour is hammering in his yard, no chainsaw is screaming in the woods and the only fishing boat I see on the bay is too far away for it’s engine noise to reach over. The sky is blue and the first sun rays are bathing the City of Eastport in a bright morning light. Molly is already ahead of me sniffing up the news along the pavement. They say for dogs it is like reading the newspaper. Who was here before me, did anybody drop something edible? And didn’t I hear the rustle of a mouse? Well, on this quiet morning one might actually hear even a mouse running through the dry grass.

I love quiet Sunday mornings. It allows me to ponder about things. Something from the past, or about the nearing spring and summer. Vivid pictures from long ago appear in my head, I see crocus and first spring bloom, and fresh green grass.

Well, it’s still a few more weeks until that happens, but anticipation is almost as much fun as when it actually happens.

WARNING: Political Content

THE SIMILARITIES
It is said that decisions should not be made while in an angry mood. But AMERICA is angry and Americans are about to make a decision. It's a decision with possible consequences far beyond anything of what many Americans have any idea of at this time. And these consequences are the reason while the entire world is watching whether America is going to turn into a fascist nation.

Elections are always a time when people's political engagements are running high, and of course, it is a hallmark of any working democracy.

However, there is plenty evidence from history that presidents should be chosen carefully especially when the population is in a state of anger and despair. It is too easy to end up with the wrong guy.

1933 was the year Germany was full of anger over staggering unemployment, poverty and a government which was unable to make any changes. A man by the name of Adolf Hitler entered the stage and promised to put an end to all the misery the Germans had been going through. He promised work and he painted a picture of making Germany Great Again. he was appointed FÜHRER and REICHSKANZLER (CHANCELLOR) that very same year.

Listening to his many speeches it reminds about Presidential Candidate Trump. Not only because his demagogic way of speaking and connecting to the uneducated masses, but also the way his audience is responding to his cheap remarks with wild cheers. The trouble with Mr.Trump's audience is that very few, if any, have any knowledge about the dangers of political demagogues and their wild promises of fixing any problem. Most have already mixed up their need for life entertainment with assessing a candidate's ability to be a world leader. Mr. Trump's reputation took another hit when it became apparent that condoning KKK members openly supporting his candidacy, did not give him a headache.
Taking a look at the conditions for the rise of Mr.Trump one finds the very
same sociological ingredients as was the case prior to Adolf Hitler's appointment for chancellor.
Parts of America are still struggling with unemployment, poverty is at a staggering 14.8% and the Obama administration has been suffering of a never-ending obstructionism by the Republican party.
                         Mr. Trump's night literature
But it doesn't end here.
Hitler killed 6mill Jews, Trump wants to deport 11mill. Muslims illegal immigrants. Hitler wanted to make Germany great again, Trump wants to make America great again. Hitler looked upon all other nations as inferior and so does Mr.Trump. He calls Mexicans for drug addicts/dealers and rapists and wants to build a wall. Mr. Trump orders coloured spectators removed from his audience. It also became apparent that he tends to be violent when he said he wanted to punch a protester in his face. Yes, his understanding of free speech is special. Is he going to punch the French President into his face if the man refuses to agree with Mr. Trump?

Besides of all this, the party he is actually representing hates his guts and wants him removed because they can't control him.
But, of course, because the GOP has no concept of arriving at any consensus they are too late to stop "The Donald" from receiving the nomination.

It's like being in 1933 observing Adolf Hitler taking control.
God Save America from this man. Otherwise Canada is ending up with another load of refugees - from the U.S.

March Sun

We are approaching the best time of the year – SPRING! Even though we might get another snow shower or two, all snow is gone for now. Days are bright and sunny and once in a while we see a US car license from somewhere farther south.

The sun is tempting us to walk out into nature and we do a walk through the forest. Lake Glensevern is free of ice, possibly due to a little salt in the water after the last storm.

The trail is mostly dry, Molly enjoys to sniff up familiar and unfamiliar smells along the trail. The birch trees are shedding their outer layer of bark and like fur on a deer it hangs from the trees. I have a plastic bag and gather birch bark. I use it to start my morning fires in the stove.

Birch bark burns like gas and produces a lot of heat. It never fails.
We come to an intersection. From here to the left it isn’t far to Gibraltar Rock. No monkeys there so we are heading straight on. We are on the original carriage trail which led the Roosevelts and other summer residents to the lake and via a long-gone bridge across the lake to the ocean beach.

The trail has deep ruts. Are they from the carriages? I am not sure, but this is historic ground on Campobello.

My plastic bag is filling quickly. There is much more bark than we can get with us today. What a wonderful natural forest.

Take a little trip to the beach and have a look at how the last storm surge changed the sand deposits.

On our way home we drop by the grocer and Bea gets some chocolate cookies for coffee.
At home we meet “Gracie” behind the door. Gracie is with us again as her owners are on a few days trip south. We couldn’t take Gracie on this walk. It would have been too long for her and the terrain is too rough. Also she might have gotten cold. Her 16 years of age makes her a grand old dog lady.

Love those sunny pre-spring days!

Being A Canadian

We may have just found the most badass Canadian ever

We’re not just a bunch of polite softies up here.

MICHAEL HISCOCK - FEB 25

Whoever did the casting for The Revenant should’ve talked to this guy.

Seventy-year-old Jimmy Iqaluq from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut was by himself hunting for POLAR BEARS this weekend when his snowmobile fell through the ice, according to the CBC.

Normally, this would’ve meant that Iqaluq was a goner. But this is no normal story. Instead, the senior managed to scramble back out of the frigid waters and then tie his snowmoile to the ice, in an effort to save it.

Oh, and did we mention there were killer whales in the water?

Now soaking wet and freezing cold, the carver tried to make his way to a small island–and this is where things start to feel like a Final Destination movie. Because it was low tide when the incident occurred, Iqaluq was forced to climb up sheer, jagged ice to access it. Having finally escaped polar bears, killer whales, sharp ice and frigid waters, he then did something else that amazes us: he built himself an igloo.

Once the shelter was complete and the senior had a chance to sit down, he began to feel his sopping wet legs getting numb. To warm them up, he decided to use a fox, which he had caught earlier, as his new pair of pants. Iqaluq skinned the animal and wore its fur, and then around 5 a.m. the next day, a search team located his igloo.

Not surprisingly, Iqaluq has since made it home safely. Although his snowmobile wasn’t as lucky.

Talk about the coolest grandpa ever.
