The open Road Itch

I have noticed it coming over the last coupla days. The itch after going down the open road is getting to me. Maybe it was the recent visit of campers here or it might just be that my inner clock is ticking towards winter. At least I am filled by a strange urge to get rolling down the open road towards an open and different type of landscape.

Some people, mainly in the family, have thought I would start to settle down some day. Well, “some day” is still far away for me, if it ever comes.
Over the past days I haven’t been thinking of much else than the big yearly journey to the Great South West.

I know, it seems stupid  not going to, say Florida, when one lives on the east coast. But Florida never really interested me. And I am not a guy who would thrive for longer than 2 weeks at the most in any RV-Resort. It just doesn’t cut it for me. Why would I move into a place where they have rules over rules on what to do and what not. I might as well stay home as I have a lot less “rules” around here than I would in any given RV-Resort-Style place.

FREEDOM is the great essence of being out traveling and I have felt that way since I was 18. Actually I was 21, when I undertook my first out-alone camping trip into a foreign country. And surprisingly it is still the same wild joy when I see the endless road in front of me. I love to get into a rest area, sitting down, having a meal,  stretching out in my own seat, maybe even have a little nap, then continue down the road.

I should have been a Gypsy. Maybe I carry Gypsy blood in my veins. After 6 months out here I simply need a change of surroundings. And after 4-7 years in the same town or community I have pulled up the stakes and moved on. Will I do that again?  Honestly, I don’t think so, but one never really knows.

Have a great coming weekend and thanks for taking a break here.

  1. I so understand what you are saying. I know it's going to be hot when we get to AZ but it still feels so good to be on the road.

  3. Boy, am I with you. I just know I have Gypsy blood too and I really hope we're able to keep moving for quite some time to come. I look forward to heading south in the winter and north in the summer. Staying put for too long of a time really gets to me. Most people don't understand. It takes another "gypsy" to know what we're saying.

  4. I'm with you on every one of your thoughts & feelings. Know exactly what you are talking about & I thought you laid it out well. Also have the same love & interest for the Southwest & also share your disdain for staying in RV Parks. Some of us have that Gypsy blood in our veins & that is just the way it is with us. And, for Kelly & I, I'm glad it's the way it is. Wouldn't want it any other way. Good for you in stepping forward with your preferred lifestyle thoughts........:))

  5. The itch is there for a lot of us. Being fulltime in our coach allows us to just keep moving around. But we do stay in our membership parks as well as the other areas along the way. Like a magnet the southwest just keeps pulling us back. Hope to run into you guys again this winter. Get those wheels turning.

  7. Florida also holds no appeal for me. Can't wait to get back to Arizona though !

  8. Both of us suffer from the wanderlust too! Now with the darker mornings, cooler temps during the night, and the fall colors coming on, the traveling itch has grown considerably worse.
